Detailed introduction
Glycerol, also known as glycerin, has the chemical formula C3H8O3. It is colorless, odorless, and sweet-tasting, appearing as a clear, viscous liquid. As an organic compound, it can absorb moisture from the air and also adsorb hydrogen sulfide, hydrogen cyanide, and sulfur dioxide. It is poorly soluble in benzene, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, carbon disulfide, petroleum ether, and oils, and serves as the structural backbone of triglyceride molecules.
1. A colorless, transparent, odorless, viscous liquid with a sweet taste and hygroscopic properties. It is miscible with water, alcohols, amines, and phenols in any proportion, and its aqueous solutions are neutral. It is soluble in 11 parts of ethyl acetate and approximately 500 parts of diethyl ether. It is insoluble in benzene, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, carbon disulfide, petroleum ether, oils, and long-chain fatty alcohols. It is flammable and may ignite or explode upon contact with strong oxidizing agents such as chromium trioxide and potassium chlorate. It also serves as an excellent solvent for many inorganic salts and gases. It is non-corrosive to metals; when used as a solvent, it can be oxidized to acrolein.
Chemical properties: It undergoes esterification with acids, for example, reacting with phthalic acid to form alkyd resins; it participates in transesterification reactions with esters; and it reacts with hydrogen chloride to yield chlorohydrins. Glycerol can be dehydrated in two ways: intermolecular dehydration yields diglycerol and polyglycerols, while intramolecular dehydration produces acrolein. Glycerol reacts with bases to form alkoxides; it also reacts with aldehydes and ketones to form acetals and ketals. Oxidation with dilute nitric acid yields glyceraldehyde and dihydroxyacetone; oxidation with periodic acid produces formic acid and formaldehyde. Contact with strong oxidizing agents such as chromic anhydride, potassium chlorate, or potassium permanganate may cause combustion or explosion. Glycerol can also undergo nitrations and acylations, among other reactions.
2. Non-toxic. Even when ingested in a dilute solution at a total dose of up to 100 g, it is harmless; upon hydrolysis in the body, it is oxidized and converted into a nutritional source. In animal experiments, when administered in extremely large quantities, it exhibits an anesthetic effect comparable to that of alcohol.
3. It is present in flue-cured tobacco leaves, burley tobacco leaves, oriental tobacco leaves, and tobacco smoke.
4. Naturally occurs in tobacco, beer, wine, and cocoa.
