Bio-asphalt

Category:

Biodiesel

As traditional fossil fuels continue to be depleted and global demand for low‑carbon, environmentally friendly solutions grows, both domestic and international research on bioasphalt—a novel material—has gained momentum. Countries such as the United States, the Netherlands, and Norway have already constructed experimental road sections paved with bioasphalt. Bioasphalt refers to asphalt‑like materials produced by liquefying and separating forestry residues, municipal waste, and animal manure; it also comprises high‑molecular‑weight carbohydrates remaining from the processing of biomass feedstocks into bio‑based products (such as furfural, furfuryl alcohol, dimethylfuran, and biodiesel). It is characterized by its broad availability, low cost, environmental friendliness, and renewability. At present, researchers worldwide have explored the preparation of bioasphalt using raw materials including pine wood, willow wood, waste circuit boards, pig manure, and rice husks.
