Lubricating oils generally consist of two main components: base oil and additives. The base oil is the primary constituent of the lubricant, determining its fundamental properties, while additives help to address and enhance the limitations of the base oil, imparting new performance characteristics; thus, they are an essential part of the lubricant formulation.

Lubricant base oils are primarily classified into three major categories: mineral base oils, synthetic base oils, and bio-based base oils. Mineral base oils are widely used and account for the vast majority of applications—over 95%—but certain applications necessitate products formulated with synthetic or bio-based base oils, driving the rapid growth of these two alternative base oil types.

Mineral base oils are refined from crude oil. The primary production processes for lubricant base oils include atmospheric and vacuum distillation, solvent deasphalting, solvent refining, solvent dewaxing, and clay or hydrotreating–based secondary refining. In 1995, China revised its existing standards for lubricant base oils, primarily revising the classification system and introducing two specialized categories: low‑pour‑point base oils and deeply refined base oils. In the production of mineral‑based lubricants, selecting the optimal crude oil is of paramount importance.

The chemical composition of mineral base oils comprises a mixture of high-boiling, high-molecular-weight hydrocarbons and nonhydrocarbon compounds. Their typical constituents include alkanes (straight-chain, branched, and highly branched), cycloalkanes (mono‑, bi‑, and polycyclic), aromatics (mono‑ and polycyclic), naphthenoaromatics, as well as oxygen‑, nitrogen‑, and sulfur‑containing organic compounds, along with nonhydrocarbon substances such as resins and asphaltenes. Bio‑based lubricants (vegetable oils) are gaining increasing popularity because they are readily biodegradable, thereby significantly reducing environmental pollution. As industrial enterprises worldwide strive to minimize their environmental impact, these “natural” lubricants offer precisely this advantage. Although vegetable oils are more costly, the additional expense is offset by the reduced environmental remediation costs associated with using conventional mineral or synthetic lubricants.
