Biodiesel
Detailed introduction
Biodiesel refers to fatty acid methyl esters or ethyl esters produced through the transesterification of vegetable oils (such as rapeseed oil, soybean oil, peanut oil, corn oil, cottonseed oil, etc.), animal fats (such as fish oil, lard, beef tallow, mutton fat, etc.), waste cooking oils, or microbial oils with methanol or ethanol. Biodiesel is a quintessential “green energy” source, characterized by excellent environmental performance, superior engine start-up and combustion properties, favorable fuel performance, and a wide range of readily available, renewable feedstocks. Vigorously developing biodiesel holds significant strategic importance for promoting sustainable economic development, advancing energy substitution, alleviating environmental pressures, and controlling urban air pollution.
Fuel characteristics
Biodiesel’s fuel performance is comparable to that of petroleum-based diesel and exhibits unparalleled advantages.
(1) Excellent ignition performance. The cetane number is a key quality indicator for assessing the combustion performance of fuels in compression‑ignition engines; biodiesel has a higher cetane number, exceeding 45 (compared to 45 for petroleum diesel), resulting in superior ignition characteristics relative to conventional diesel.
(2) More complete combustion. Biodiesel has a higher oxygen content—up to 11%—than petroleum diesel, requiring less oxygen during combustion and resulting in more thorough combustion compared to petroleum diesel.
(3) Wide applicability. In addition to serving as an alternative fuel for diesel engines in buses, trucks, and other vehicles, biodiesel can also be used as a substitute for diesel in non‑road applications, such as marine transportation, water‑borne propulsion systems, geological and mining equipment, and fuel‑fired power plants.
(4) Protection of power‑train components. Compared with diesel, biodiesel has a slightly higher kinematic viscosity; under conditions that do not compromise fuel atomization, it more readily forms an oil film on the cylinder walls, thereby enhancing lubrication of moving parts and reducing wear.
(5) Excellent versatility. It can be added directly to diesel engines without any modifications, and does not require the installation of additional refueling or storage‑transport equipment, nor does it necessitate specialized technical training for personnel (whereas other alternative fuels often require engine modifications to be used).
(6) Safe and reliable. Biodiesel has a higher flash point than petroleum diesel, which enhances its safety during storage, transportation, and use.
(7) Energy conservation and consumption reduction. Biodiesel is itself a fuel; when blended with petroleum diesel at a certain ratio, it can reduce fuel consumption and enhance engine performance.
(8) Excellent climate adaptability. Because biodiesel contains no paraffin, it exhibits superior low-temperature fluidity and is suitable for a wide range of regions.
(9) Versatile functionality. Biodiesel can serve not only as a fuel but also as an additive to enhance combustion efficiency, thereby offering dual functionality.
(10) It possesses excellent environmental characteristics. Biodiesel has a low sulfur content, resulting in reduced emissions of SO2 and sulfides—by approximately 30% (and up to 70% with a catalyst). Moreover, biodiesel contains no aromatic hydrocarbons that are harmful to the environment, thereby minimizing the health risks associated with its exhaust gases.
