　　Marine heavy fuel oil refers to low‑grade, hard‑to‑use, and inexpensive marine fuels—commonly known as “heavy oil.” The heavy fuel oils used in marine diesel engines are typically “middle distillates” or “residual oils,” which, due to their high viscosity, may be classified as heavy fuel oils of the poorest quality.
　　
　　 Heavy oil has the following salient characteristics:
　　
　　(1) High density. The density of heavy oil can range from 0.94 to 1.06 g/cm³. ³ , which leads to difficulties in fuel purification and atomization; moreover, during combustion, oil droplets are prone to thermal cracking, resulting in increased deposits on engine components.
　　
　　(2) High viscosity. The viscosity of heavy oil ranges from 50 to 2,000 mm²/s. ² between /s, thereby causing difficulties in fuel storage, transportation, purification, and atomization;
　　
　　(3) Complex composition. Heavy oil contains significant amounts of water, ash, and impurities such as sulfur, vanadium, sodium, silicon, and residual carbon. These impurities exacerbate corrosion and wear in the diesel engine’s combustion chamber components and fuel injection system parts.
