Detailed introduction
Solvent oil is one of the five major categories of petroleum products. It has a wide range of applications. The largest volume is used as a coating solvent—commonly referred to as paint thinner—followed by solvent oils for edible oils, printing inks, leather processing, pesticides, insecticides, rubber, cosmetics, fragrances, pharmaceuticals, and electronic components. Currently, approximately 400 to 500 types of solvents are available on the market, with solvent oils—hydrocarbon solvents and benzene‑based compounds—accounting for roughly half of this total.
The properties of solvent oil vary depending on its intended application; when selecting a solvent oil, the primary considerations should be its solvency, volatility, and safety. Of course, other performance characteristics must also be taken into account—sometimes even more so—depending on the specific use.
Solvent oil production comprises two main stages: fractionation and refining. Fractionation typically follows one of three approaches: direct fractionation from a atmospheric distillation column; further splitting of the corresponding light straight-run fractions into narrowly defined cuts; or fractional distillation of catalytic reformate raffinate. All solvent oil fractions generally undergo refining to enhance color, improve stability, remove corrosive impurities, and reduce toxicity. Common refining methods include alkali washing, clay treatment, and hydrotreating.
Solvent oil is a complex mixture of hydrocarbons that is highly flammable and explosive. Therefore, from production and storage to transportation and use, strict precautions must be taken to prevent fires.
There are roughly three methods for expressing the toxicity of solvent oil:
Lethal dose (LD): A measure commonly used to indicate the potency of a highly toxic substance in terms of its physiological effects on animals.
Lethal concentration (LC): A measure of acute toxicity expressed in terms of concentration.
Maximum Permissible Concentration (MAC): The maximum permissible concentration is typically expressed in parts per million (ppm or 10⁻⁶) of vapor in air. It provides a rough estimate of a solvent’s toxicity, varies from person to person, and does not represent an absolute threshold.
