Lightweight marine fuel
Category:
Biodiesel
Detailed introduction
Ships use residual fuel oil. Most ocean-going vessels that ply international waterways rely on fuel oil for propulsion, as it is easier to store and transport than coal and also more cost‑effective.
Residual fuel oils include marine residual fuel oils such as RMD80, RME180, and RMG380. They are primarily used in low-speed diesel engines, or blended with distillate fuels for use in low-speed diesel engines.
Steam turbines use heavy oil to fire their boilers because heavy oil is more viscous, which facilitates sustained combustion, whereas lighter oils—including gasoline and diesel—are more fluid; they produce very high combustion temperatures but cannot sustain burning for long.
