Biodiesel is the fatty acid methyl ester or ethyl ester formed from vegetable oil (such as rapeseed oil, soybean oil, peanut oil, corn oil, cotton seed oil, etc.), animal oil (such as fish oil, lard, beef oil, sheep oil, etc.), waste oil or microbial grease and methanol or ethanol through esterification. Biodiesel is a typical "green energy", with good environmental performance, good engine starting performance, good fuel performance, wide range of raw materials, renewable and other characteristics. Biodiesel is a typical "green energy", with good environmental performance, good engine starting performance, good fuel performance, wide range of raw materials, renewable and other characteristics. The vigorous development of biodiesel is of strategic importance for sustainable economic development, promoting energy substitution, reducing environmental pressure and controlling urban air pollution.
  
Fuel properties
  
The fuel performance of biodiesel is close to that of petroleum-based diesel, and it has incomparable performance.
  
(1) Good ignition performance. Cetane number is the quality index to measure the fuel performance in compression ignition engine, biodiesel has higher cetane number, which is more than 45 (45 for petrochemical diesel), and the ignition performance is better than petrochemical diesel.
  
(2) Fuller combustion. The oxygen content of biodiesel is higher than that of fossil diesel, up to 11%, and the amount of oxygen required in the combustion process is less than that of fossil diesel, so the combustion is more adequate than that of fossil diesel.
  
(3) Wide applicability. Besides being the alternative fuel for diesel engines such as buses and trucks, biodiesel can also be the alternative fuel for non-road diesel engines such as marine transportation, water power equipment, geological mining equipment and fuel power plants.
  
(4) Protect power equipment. The viscosity of biodiesel is slightly higher than that of diesel, so it is easier to form an oil film on the cylinder wall without affecting the atomization of fuel, which can improve the lubricity of moving parts and reduce the wear of parts.
  
(5) Good versatility. No need to change the diesel engine, can be directly added to use, while no additional refueling equipment, storage and transportation equipment and personnel special technical training (usually other alternative fuels may need to modify the engine to use).
  
(6) Safe and reliable. The flash point of biodiesel is higher than that of fossil diesel, which is conducive to safe storage, transportation and use.
  
(7) Energy saving and consumption reduction. Biodiesel itself is a fuel, and it can reduce fuel consumption and improve power performance by mixing with fossil diesel in a certain proportion.
  
(8) Strong adaptability to climate. Biodiesel does not contain paraffin and has good liquidity at low temperature, so it can be used in a wide range of areas.
  
(9) Multi-function. Biodiesel not only can be used as fuel but also can be used as additive to promote combustion effect, so it has double functions.
  
(10) It has excellent environmental characteristics. The low sulfur content in biodiesel makes the emission of SO2 and sulfide low, which can be reduced by about 30% (70% when there is a catalyst); biodiesel does not contain aromatic hydrocarbons that can cause pollution to the environment, so the exhaust gas produced is low damage to human body.
